'Human swastika' at San Jose high school prompts investigation

A photo of eight teenagers lying in the shape of a swastika on Branham High School’s football field, accompanied by an antisemitic quote from Adolf Hitler, circulated online Wednesday, raising concerns in the district and beyond.

The photo was initially posted on Instagram by an account that featured the first and last name of a student who attends the San Jose public school. The post and account were removed from Instagram by Friday morning.

Branham High School Principal Beth Silbergeld condemned the incident on Thursday in a statement sent through an online portal for parents. J. obtained a screenshot of the statement.

“Branham High School is aware of a recent incident circulating on social media that does not reflect the values of our school community,” Silbergeld said in the statement. “The incident is being investigated in accordance with district procedures, and appropriate follow-up will occur. We want to be clear: Branham stands firmly against all forms of hate, discrimination, and intolerance. Acts that target, demean, or threaten others have no place on our campus.”

(JEWISH GROUP) Suspect in 2024 attack of two Jewish students on DePaul University's campus pleads guilty battery

The suspect who attacked two Jewish students on DePaul's campus last year has now pleaded guilty, but only to less serious charges.

Adam Erkan, who was wearing a ski mask at the time, was facing felony hate crime charges for his role in attacking two Jewish students at DePaul University in the fall of 2024. Now, he has pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of battery. His initial hate crime charges have been dropped.

"I think it's, at the very least, a step in the right direction for some sort of closure. You know, it's not the end of the book, but it may be the end of a page," said student Michael Kaminsky.

Kaminsky and Max Long, who is a reservist in the Israeli Defense Forces, were attacked on campus while showing support for Israel. They were holding a sign that said "Ask me anything about Israel."

"It's critical for us to be out there and be sharing what happened to us so this doesn't happen again," Long said.

His sentence? Two years of probation and community service after admitting to a targeted assault and NO hate crime enhancement!

(JEWISH GROUP) Op-ed: Standing for Dialogue: Reflections on hosting Moumen Al-Natour

On Nov. 11, Tufts Friends of Israel, together with the Department of Political Science, hosted a conversation with Moumen Al-Natour, a Palestinian human rights activist who has spent years speaking out against Hamas. The Center for Peace Communications joined via Zoom to help translate and later share Al-Natour’s story with wider audiences. About 45 students and community members attended. Many told me afterward that they heard perspectives they had never encountered before. That reaction alone made the event worth hosting.

But the afternoon was memorable for another reason. In the middle of the event, three masked individuals burst into the room shouting over Al-Natour , attempting to end the Zoom call and prevent him from being heard. Their interruption lasted about a minute. They left before Tufts University Police Department officers arrived, and we continued without further incident. Still, the moment highlighted something deeper, something I feel compelled to speak about.

What happened in that room was not a peaceful protest. It was an attempt to silence. It was an effort to drown out a Palestinian man speaking about his own life, his own community and his own hopes for the future. Al-Natour is not speaking from the comfort of a college campus. He is in hiding in Gaza. He has already been imprisoned and tortured by Hamas for criticizing its rule. He told us openly that he is being hunted as we speak. And yet he showed his face on our screen without hesitation, speaking calmly, answering questions and expressing gratitude for the chance to be heard.

In contrast, the three students who stormed our event concealed their identities while shouting over someone who has risked everything to tell his story. The contrast was painful to watch. It should trouble all of us, no matter our politics. American college students felt entitled to speak over a Palestinian dissident as if they understood his life better than he does. It was a moment that revealed how quickly moral certainty can turn into arrogance.

(JEWISH GROUP) If Israel reinstates the death penalty, it will betray Jewish values -- and Jewish history

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP!

The Knesset is considering a bill that would instate the death penalty as a punishment for convicted terrorists in Israel. Passing it would be an enormous mistake.

Allowing executions in the Jewish state — the justice system of which has, since 1954, only issued that punishment to Holocaust perpetrator Adolf Eichmann — would only give fodder to Israel’s enemies. Right now, Israel stands apart in the Middle East for its abolishment of the death penalty. Hamas regularly executes Palestinians in Gaza, extrajudicially and otherwise. A court operating under Yemen’s Houthi rebels recently sentenced 17 people to death for allegedly spying on behalf of Israel and others. Iran, which has carried out death sentences against Jews, has executed more than 1,500 people in 2025 alone.

Which means that if Israel violates its moral obligations and ethical standards by undoing its historic commitment to not inflicting the one punishment that can never be undone, it will be giving its enemies a gift.

First, changing the justice system to allow for the death penalty would provide Hamas terrorists incarcerated in Israel with a new platform for their message. Hamas could proclaim them to be martyred heroes — a new layer of disingenuous but effective propaganda.

I don't care how "others will view it", because anti-Israel bigots and anti-Semites will demonize Israel and Jews no matter what, but I see this bill as bigoted and as a violation of Jewish and democratic principles. While I sometimes find myself not bothered by the death penalty because of certain crime/perpetrator, at my core, I think it is something no state should EVER enact.

(JEWISH GROUP) Guy Pearce Apologizes After Sharing Antisemitic Posts on Social Media

Guy Pearce has apologized after posting “misinformation and falsehoods” on social media while showing his support of Palestine.

According to Jewish News, the actor reportedly posted content featuring white nationalist and far-right political activist Nick Fuentes. Other posts reportedly claimed that the “top three pornography companies are owned by Jewish people,” blamed Israel for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and accused Israeli officials of orchestrating Charlie Kirk’s murder.

Pearce also reportedly shared posts from an account dubbed Corefitnessbynaz2. According to Jewish News, the posts read: “Remember, when Zionists tell you Islam will destroy America… While several major Las Vegas casinos/hotels that have caused gambling addictions, debt and prostitution were created and owned by Jewish Zionists… The Zionists (not Jews) want you to fear the people who stand against the corruption they are creating.”

Reached by Jewish News, Pearce offered an apology.

“It has been brought to my attention that, in my support of Palestine, I have inadvertently re-posted articles, and/or statements, that have contained misinformation and falsehoods,” the actor said. “I am aware how sharing inaccurate content can cause confusion and distress; for this I am deeply sorry. I will certainly endeavor to be more diligent in future to verify anything I share online.”

Shunned by the right, targeted by the left, Eva Illouz confronts antisemitism masquerading as academic freedom

Last month, the Dutch city of Rotterdam became the latest stage for antisemites parading as anti-Zionists. It occurred at the city’s Erasmus School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, named after Desiderius Erasmus, the great Dutch humanist best known, rather ironically, for the satirical work, In Praise of Folly. In this instance, however, the academic fools strutting as anti-Zionists made the mistake of targeting the wrong person, Eva Illouz.

A member of the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris, Illouz is a renowned sociologist who has published several influential books on the role played by emotions in politics and economics. No less important, Illouz is a prominent public intellectual in France, where she is a frequent contributor to Le Monde, and Israel, where her byline is often found in the pages of Haaretz.

Illouz also holds the dubious distinction of winning but not receiving the prestigious Israel Prize. Earlier this year, the prize committee chose her for the award — previously given to figures like Amoz Oz, Martin Buber, and Gershom Scholem — but their decision was nullified by Yoav Kisch, the minister of education. Outraged that Illouz signed a petition sent to the International Crime Tribunal in 2021 to investigate alleged Israeli war crimes in the West Bank, Kisch denounced her “anti-Israel ideology.”

This was not the last folly that would befall Illouz this year. Invited to give a talk, “Romantic Love and Capitalism,” at the Love Lab, a research department at the Erasmus School, Illouz was then abruptly disinvited. Last month, she learned from the lab’s director that “not all the members of the faculty were “comfortable with the initial invitation.” The reason, predictably, was Illouz’s former affiliation with Hebrew University, even though she no longer taught there. While the decision was not unanimous, the director added, it was nevertheless arrived at “democratically.”

In the spirit of Erasmus, Illouz replied that she was “delighted to learn that a truly antisemitic decision was arrived at democratically” for which the “faculty members must feel all the more virtuous.” But Illouz also asked a lawyer to challenge the decision which, earlier this week, led the school’s rector to issue both an official apology and a new invitation to speak at the school.

(JEWISH GROUP) Graffiti during Mexican protests against Claudia Sheinbaum's government calls out 'Jewish whore'

Mexico’s Jewish community has condemned antisemitic graffiti apparently directed toward the country’s Jewish president during an anti-government protest on Saturday.

The graffiti painted on the door of the Supreme Court building said “puta judia” or “Jewish whore,” in what has been widely interpreted as a reference to Claudia Sheinbaum. It also included a crossed-out Star of David.

The graffiti was painted during a youth-led protest that responds to rising violence, crime and corruption, particularly by drug cartels. Dozens of people were reportedly arrested and injured in Saturday’s protests.

“The Jewish Community of Mexico strongly condemns the antisemitic remarks and expressions” during the march, the community said in a statement on Sunday. “Antisemitism is a form of discrimination according to our constitution and must be rejected clearly and unequivocally.”

(JEWISH GROUP) Anonymous Statement Defends Disruption of Hillel Oct. 7 Memorial at Pomona College

Excerpt from Claremont Undercurrents' publication of the anonymous statement on Instagram. Photo credit: Claremont Undercurrents, with highlights added.

Last week, an Oct. 7 memorial hosted at Pomona College by Claremont Hillel featuring Yoni Viloga, a survivor of the attacks, was disrupted by protestors. Afterwards, an anonymous statement defending the disruption was sent to multiple campus newspapers, referring to Viloga as “Satan” and “the spawn of a genocidal lineage,” and to Zionism as a “death cult that must be dealt with accordingly.”

“We know Pomona. Time and again, they have demonstrated their most important ‘core value’ is the endorsement and defense of genocide… [they] will go to any length to despicably defend genocide and paint Black and brown bodies who resist as violent,” reads the statement. “Therefore, it came as no surprise when they hosted a genocidal maniac, Yoni Viloga, to speak for a ‘memorial’ of the casualties of Al Aqsa Flood.” Al Aqsa Flood is the Hamas codename for the Oct. 7 attacks.

Viloga’s kibbutz was overrun by Hamas militants on Oct. 7. He and his family brought members of the community into their home, protecting 16 people in their bomb shelter. When they were able to leave, Viloga and his family filled four cars with people and fled from the village, passing numerous bodies as they drove to safety.

Immediately after Viloga finished speaking at Hillel’s Oct. 7 memorial, four masked and keffiyeh-wearing protestors burst into the room, shouting “Zionists not welcome here” and yelling at attendees that they were “all complicit in genocide.” The disruptors were eventually forced out of the room by faculty members and attendees of the event. The memorial was hosted on Oct. 15, the Hebrew-calendar anniversary of the attacks, and after the recent ceasefire agreement was approved by Hamas and Israel.
